The City of Vincent’s Smoke-Free Town Centres project has gained overwhelming community support and positive impact on the ground as part of a one-year review.

This permanent initiative, which was launched in entertainment precincts North Perth, Mt Hawthorn, Leederville, William Street and Beaufort Street in November 2022, aimed to reduce community exposure to environmental tobacco smoke and vaping.

It has played a key part in creating healthy environments, free from smoking and vaping.

The one-year review showed an 88 per cent overall support rate from 563 responses. Notably, this support has seen a significant increase from the 78 per cent support rate recorded at the six-month mark, indicating growing acceptance and appreciation for the project.

Throughout the past 14 months, an education-first approach has been central to the project's success. Brand Ambassadors have engaged with the community during peak times, providing information and fostering compliance with smoke-free areas. This approach, coupled with the enforcement of local laws, has resulted in high levels of support and minimal reports of hostility.

The project's impact extends to local businesses, with venues like The Paddo in Mt Hawthorn experiencing increased foot traffic due to their smoke-free areas. Results from a 12-month review survey revealed 85 per cent of business owners supported the project, with 95 per cent indicating either no impact or a positive impact on their businesses.

Looking ahead, the City of Vincent is committed to continue its education and awareness campaigns, along with its Rangers' assistance on monitoring the smoke and vape-free town centres. Collaboration with local businesses remains a priority, supported by ongoing reporting to Healthway on project delivery and outcomes.
