Councillor for the Day

The City of Vincent invites local school students to step into the shoes of a local elected member through our Councillor for the Day program.

Aspiring young leaders have the opportunity to visit Council Chambers to participate in a mock council meeting and gain a practical understanding of council meeting procedures and how decisions are made.

They learn about the three tiers of government, the history and role of the City of Vincent, its administrators and elected members. The Mayor or one of our Councillors hosts a Q&A session with the students followed by morning tea.

Schools are provided with a meeting agenda and topics for discussion in advance. Council roles will be pre-arranged by the school and students encouraged to prepare their questions for the Q&A session.

What students say

Sacred Heart students took part in two meetings where they followed an agenda, took turns to act as the Mayor, CEO, councillors and council officers, engaged in debate and  decision making.

Sacred Heart Primary student Winter Johnson said it was the first time she visited the Chamber.

“It was very exciting to be a part of it,” she said.

“I had a good idea and I wanted to put up my hand, but I was the minute-taker.

“My mum wants me to be in Federal (politics)…but I think I would enjoy local more.”

Student Mayor Jada Gasper said she enjoyed being in charge of a meeting.

“I was sitting where the Mayor actually sat...I got to play her role, so I felt very important,” she said.

“I had a big sense of responsibility.”

Take part

We are inviting schools within the City of Vincent to take part in the program in Term 3 2025. If your school is interested, let us know by completing the below form or contact us.
