Electrical vehicles
PROJECT
The City of Vincent is looking to provide electrical vehicle (EV) infrastructure in its public carparks and local streets, in response to an increased uptake in Perth.
EVs are becoming more popular in WA, with the number of vehicles increasing by over 513 per cent between 31 December 2021 and 30 June 2024.
According to the Department of Transport, as of 30 June 2024 there were 23,125 licensed light EVs and 2,077,416 light vehicles licensed in WA.
In light of this, we will be investigating opportunities to provide electric vehicle infrastructure across Vincent, including in public carparking areas and on residential streets.
There are currently three Vincent-owned public EV charging stations– one in The Avenue Car Park and two in the Chelmsford Road Car Park.
Some older homes do not have a driveway, garage, off-road parking, or the electrical capacity for an EV charging station. That is why we are investigating opportunities for homeowners to install private chargers on their verges and for us to build more public chargers.
Our aim is to provide more reliable and fast charging options for EV vehicle owners and empower other residents to make the switch.
There are several benefits to installing EV infrastructure. These include:
- Reduced emissions and improved air quality.
- Access to efficient and dependable charging options.
- Lower operating costs.
- Healthier environment and community.
- A cleaner and more sustainable future.
As part of the underground power program with Western Power, we will be looking at on street options as possible locations for future charging stations.
We will also explore whether the future multi-deck carpark in the Leederville Carpark Redevelopment could house EV chargers.
This project aligns with the Sustainable Environment Strategy 2019-2024, which commits to facilitating investment in electric vehicle charging infrastructure and supporting community uptake of zero emission vehicles.
It also supports the Accessible City priority in the Strategic Community Plan 2022-2032 which seeks to embrace emerging transport technologies.
WHY WE NEED HELP
We are seeking funding from the State Government towards the installation of fast chargers (DC) in our neighbourhoods and the development of a holistic strategy that is shared between State and Local Governments.
Fast chargers are more efficient than slow chargers (AC), but do require additional space and funds for power supply upgrades. These will benefit not just our residents but visitors to town centres who do not live in Vincent.
We are also advocating the State Government to prioritise the delivery of EV charging stations, consider changes to standards so that property owners can install their own on verges and implementing a coordinated approach towards providing infrastructure.
