244 Vincent Street, Leederville WA 6007

History

In 1915, Leederville Oval hosted its first football game. It wasn’t until 1919 when any facilities were built on the grounds, at the insistence of the West Australian Football League. A grandstand was built in 1920 and by 1921, facilities included seating, fencing, turnstiles and ticket houses.

In 1943, the main entrance was enlarged and eventually, the oval also had tennis courts and a cycle track.

For many years, Leederville Oval was the home of West Perth Football Club. The western grandstand was named after Mr R. P Fletcher, the club’s president from 1946 to 1962.

The oval was used by World War I for cadet drilling and was also a training ground during the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games.

Leederville Oval has been dedicated as a Football Centre of Excellence and was added to the State Heritage list in 2003.
