The City of Vincent is seeking approval from Main Roads WA (MRWA) to expand permanent 40km/h speed zones to the rest of its local roads.

Earlier this year, MRWA approved a permanent 40km/h speed limit in parts of North Perth and an existing trial area, which equates to 40 per cent of Vincent’s local roads.

The area bounded by Charles, Angove, Fitzgerald, Vincent and William streets is included in the 40km/h speed zone in North Perth.

The existing 40km/h trial area, which is bounded by Newcastle, Vincent and Charles streets and the Swan River has also been made permanent.

Vincent is now pushing ahead with its proposal to drop the speed limit on the remaining 60 per cent of its local roads.

Main streets will not be impacted as the 40km/h speed zones include residential streets only.

“As an inner-city community, residents regularly ask us to find ways to reduce rat running and slow traffic on their streets,” said Mayor Emma Cole.

“It’s important that our kids feel safe walking and riding to school, people can get around safely without relying on a car and our streets are comfortable and calm.

“We would like to thank Main Roads WA for helping us becoming one step closer to reaching our goal of dropping speed limits to 40km/h on all local roads in Vincent.

“The permanent 40km/h speed zones include streets where there are many local pedestrians and cyclists travelling from home to school, work and the town centre on a daily basis.”

Previous consultations have shown community support for the reduction of the speed limit to 40km/h in local roads.

A community survey conducted in late 2022 showed 57 per cent of respondents supported the reduction of the speed limit to 40km/h in residential streets.

Meanwhile, the public will be consulted this month on a proposal to reduce the speed limit from 60km/h to 40km/h on Vincent Street, from the intersection of William Street to Beaufort Street, Mt Lawley.

As Vincent Street is a District Distributor Road, this proposal would require approval from MRWA.

This comes after residents asked Council to consider a speed reduction along this section of Vincent Street.

“We often hear from local residents who live in this area that 60km/h is too fast and makes it difficult for them to cross the road,” said Ms Cole.

“With a section of Vincent Street along Hyde Park already being in a 40km/h speed zone, this proposal will provide consistency and slower speeds as vehicles approach nearby activity centres.

“We want to see if there is wider community support for this before we put in an application to MRWA for approval.”
