Sullivan Logistics Stadium upgrades, winter planting and kerb ramps

The mighty East Perth Royals will be playing in the second WAFL semi-final against Swan Districts at their home ground Sullivan Logistics Stadium in Leederville this weekend.

I’d love to see a big crowd at the blockbuster match and hopefully a win for the minor premiers.

Once finals are over, works will begin to revitalise this iconic ground.

We were delighted to receive a $3.8 million grant from the State Government to upgrade the turf and lights at the stadium.

It has been our long-term goal to transform our biggest football ground into a local AFL venue that can host major state and national-level matches.

We will continue to work with the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, AFL, WA Football Commission and our friends East Perth and Subiaco football clubs to ensure the upcoming works run smoothly.

Keep an eye on our social media channels and enewsletter for more updates as works get started.

Rolling on with the run of good news, Vincent will be home to the AFLW RAC Derby between West Coast and Fremantle on 19 October.

I hope to see thousands of fans and families come along, enjoy female football at its best and the lively atmosphere in the heart of Leederville.

We’re all about building new community facilities that are high in demand, while also maintaining our existing ones.

Our long-awaited Mt Hawthorn Skate Space at Britannia Reserve is ready for skate, thanks to funding from the State Government.

This skate park is the first of its kind in Vincent. It is community-focused and dedicated to youngsters who are either learning how to skate or need a space to practice their skills.

We’re inviting families to our free opening event on 21 September, with fun demonstrations, kids’ activities, free coffees from Stomp Coffee and snacks from Hobart Deli.

There are also more free events coming up this month, such as a poppy making workshop and a Packed with Goodness Session where parents can pick up tips on packing healthy lunchboxes.

While we've had cooler weather and rain, our Parks team have continued their work to enhance and preserve our urban tree canopy.

Throughout the winter planting season, thousands of new trees and native plants have been planted, including new verge trees in new spots in East Perth as part of our tree mapping project.  Next year we are scheduled to plant out even more than this year.

The recently completed mapping project recorded the current health maintenance requirements of our 16,000 street trees.

It also identified more than 2000 ‘plant a tree’ sites where we will be planting in the next few years.

We’ve started the mapping and assessment of all trees in parks and reserves, prioritising locations known to have polyphagous shot-hole borer (PSHB) infected trees.

This will help our recovery works and determine the most suitable species as we look to plant replacement trees across our parks and neighbourhoods.

Another key priority of ours is ensuring footpaths are maintained and accessible for all.

We have installed 56 kerb ramps on footpaths in the past year, including several on Ellesmere Street in North Perth and Woodstock Street in Mt Hawthorn.

We’ll now turn our attention to installing kerb ramps in the busiest parts of our town centres.  These are not cheap, but essential to ensure our City becomes more accessible for all.

Best wishes,

Mayor Alison Xamon
