Plans for Robertson Park

One of the City of Vincent’s most popular parks is in line for a major upgrade under a development plan set to be released for community feedback.

Robertson Park, on Fitzgerald Street next to the Robertson Park Tennis Club, has long been a valuable meeting place for both locals and the wider tennis community.

A draft development plan for the park would see a range of exciting additions, including multi-sports courts, additional gardens and an enclosed dog exercise area.

“Robertson Park is a wonderful community space that needs to cater for a diverse and growing number of people well into the future,” said Mayor Emma Cole.

“We want to know what you like, what you think could be improved, and any ideas you might have for the park.

“With increasing density and population growth in the area, and as we have seen during the pandemic, our parks have become even more important to our community and are in high demand.

“We know there is a need to grow our open space and improve the quality of parks so that our community have the space needed for socialising, exercising and dog walking, and more diverse sporting opportunities.

“We also understand how important it is to acknowledge and celebrate the site’s rich Aboriginal and wetlands history in what we put forward.”

Included in the development plan are proposals to:

  • Introduce three multi-sports tennis courts to include netball and basketball;
  • Upgrade the tennis courts to acrylic hard court surfaces to create an ideal surface for coaching, junior development, winter and/or evening use;
  • Upgrade court lighting;
  • Have a new community garden;
  • Have a new enclosed dog exercise area;
  • Have a new public open space turf area;
  • Upgrade the playground;
  • Build new public toilet facilities.

Robertson Park is a registered Aboriginal site and gathering place for the Noongar People. It is currently home to a tennis centre, wetlands, Lee Hops Cottage, Halvorsen Hall and an AIDS memorial.

In drafting the plan, the City worked closely with stakeholders including the Friends of Robertson Park and Tennis Central.

The draft development plan will be available at imagine.vincent.wa.gov.au for comment next week.
