Draft budget, tree planting and Claisebrook concrete batching plants

Mayor Alison Xamon with Sacred Heart Primary School students in the Council Chamber.

We’re almost at the end of the financial year and it is a busy time for us all at Vincent.

After months of preparation and workshops, Council will be considering the draft Budget 2024/25 at next Tuesday’s Ordinary Council Meeting.  Amongst a number of changes, we are also proposing charging higher rates for vacant properties.

The draft Budget is focused on delivering essential services such as roads, footpaths and waste along with major projects that matter most to our community.

It also includes much-needed funds for tree planting and restoration works required to follow the upcoming Polyphagous shot-hole borer eradication treatment in some of our parks.

We recently kicked off our tree planting season with a lovely Red Flowering Gum (Corymbia ficifolia) in Mt Lawley.

More than 300 trees will be planted across our streets and neighbourhoods during Makuru. I hope we continue to see plenty of rain so that these trees get off to a good start.

I recently toured the Claisebrook area with representatives from the WA Planning Commission, who will be considering extended time approvals for the two concrete batching plants later this year.

The batching plants continue to impact the health and amenity of the community through high levels of dust and noise from the constant heavy truck movements.

We are advocating for the relocation of these sites, which will provide relief to residents and make way for future transit-oriented development in the inner-city area.

Vincent’s neighbourhoods are on their way to being slower and safer, with hundreds of new speed signs being installed across all local roads as part our 40km/h speed zones roll-out.

Slower roads make it safer for kids, dogs and users of alternative transport to cross the road and walk to school, work and town centres.

We’re also working with Western Power to continue progressing the Vincent Underground Power Program.

Western Power have encountered some delays which mean households in the North Perth/Mt Hawthorn project area will now not be invoiced in the 2024/25 financial year.

Nevertheless, design and plans are continuing to progress, with construction anticipated to start for this area in the first half of 2025.

We expect the first service charges for Underground Power to be issued for the North Perth/Mt Hawthorn project area in the 2025/26 financial year and we will provide those property owners with more information when it becomes available.

I recently joined Deputy Premier Hon. Rita Saffioti MLA, AS Roma and AC Milan fans and our locals at the Little Italy Festival held at the WA Italian Club and Perth Soccer Club.

The festival was presented by Tourism WA and proudly supported by Vincent.

It was great to see thousands of people celebrating all things Italian and enjoying a range of traditional food, beverages, kids’ activities and entertainment.

We hosted aspiring young politicians from Sacred Heart Primary School at our first Councillor for the Day event in the Council Chamber on 6 June.

The program is an opportunity for students to learn about local government roles and responsibilities, engage in a Q and A session with myself and participate in a mock-up council meeting.  We are keen to have more of these events to raise awareness of the importance of the Local Government sector.

Best wishes,

Mayor Alison Xamon
