Nature lovers can now enjoy a new picnic shelter with tables and seats while enjoying the pristine views of the Swan River at Banks Reserve.
The Mount Lawley parkland is Vincent’s sole riverfront reserve, spans 3.5 hectares and is a place of natural beauty and Aboriginal significance.
It is also home to a new active zone which includes a nature playground, skateable elements and a basketball half-court.
Council endorsed the Banks Reserve Master Plan in 2019, which includes the development of a central plaza space that will have a variety of uses and facilities for the community.
While the City of Vincent Master Plan continues to chip away at delivering the plan over the coming years, the new picnic shelter has been installed, with the flexibility to be relocated and reused when it is time to make way for the future plaza.
The picnic shelter is a bespoke timber design to match the natural aesthetic in the recently completed active zone. Additional plantings will also further green the area.
Mount Lawley MLA Simon Millman made an election commitment to fund these picnic upgrades, where Vincent received a $40,000 Local Communities grant as a result.
“I love bringing my family and our dog, Jet, to Banks Reserve- not only to enjoy the beautiful view it affords of the Swan River, but also to appreciate its rich history as a place of spiritual significance for the Whadjuk Noongar people," Mr Millman said.
"Mayor Emma Cole and the City of Vincent have done an outstanding job of transforming this local gem and I am proud to have assisted with the latest addition of sheltered picnic tables.”
Mayor Emma Cole encouraged residents and visitors to put the new shelter to good use, for casual picnics, parties and community gatherings.
“Banks Reserve is in a beautiful natural environment and is perfect for people who want to have a picnic with river views,” she said.
“This is a great addition to the area whilst we continue to work towards the delivery of the Banks Reserve Master Plan, including new toilets and the development of the plaza.
"If you haven’t visited Banks Reserve for a while, please bring your family and friends to enjoy the new facilities on offer.”
