October is Buy Nothing New Month. A global movement for collective, conscientious consumption. It started in Melbourne and has grown to cities in the Netherlands, USA and more.
The City of Vincent supports moving toward a circular economy. Less consumption means sending less to landfill. Anything we can do to help our community avoid waste in their daily lives can only be a good thing for our environment.
Buy Nothing New Month doesn’t mean never buying anything new or going without. It’s more of a reminder to think about alternatives.
Here’s how we’re wasting less in Vincent this month.
Live better with less workshop
Sustainability educator Laura Monisse will join us for a workshop on Saturday 5 October. Join us for practical tips on how to cut back on things we might not really need, and change the way we look at what we already have.
Buy Nothing New: Live Better with Less

Shop second hand
Giving items a second life is a great way to reduce waste and keep things out of landfill longer. We’re spoilt for choice with op shops and second hand stores in Vincent.
We’re about to add another one too, with Good Sammy opening in Leederville. Their grand opening event will be on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 October.
Try one of these:
- The new Good Sammy Leederville - opening soon
- Vinnies Mt Hawthorn
- Save the Children Op Shop Mt Hawthorn
- Red Cross Shop North Perth
- Salvos Mt Hawthorn
- Re-run Consignment North Perth
- Cool Cats Vintage Mt Lawley

Share with neighbours
A great way to save on new purchases is to check what you neighbours are giving away before hitting the shops.
Buy Nothing groups connect people who live nearby. From kitchenware to toys, you will find all sorts of things ready to be given a second life.
There are at least eight active Buy Nothing groups in our local area. Just search “buy nothing” and your suburb on Facebook to find your nearest.
Borrow instead of buy
Borrowing instead of buying can be a more affordable choice. Especially for things we use use infrequently.
Give one of these local options a try:
Tools n Things Library in Mt Hawthorn lets you borrow from a huge range of equipment from lawn mowers to camping gear for a low annual fee.
Hire shops like Loan That Label Leederville are ideal for occasions that call for an outfit a little fancier that the wallet stretches.
Mt Hawthorn and Leederville Toy Libraries allow families to borrow from a wide range of toys.
