We’ve been spoilt with a fantastic range of major festivals, sporting events, community workshops and local markets happening around Vincent throughout the summer.
I have enjoyed going to various events recently, with Perth Festival being one of the highlights. It was breathtaking to see the East Perth Power Station come to life and gives us a glimpse of what the site could be as a permanent cultural hub for Perth.
Keep reading to find out more about a new public open space for Vincent, the work we are doing to preserve our urban tree canopy and our advocacy for animal containment laws.
We recently transformed a sandy, underutilised space facing the Derbarl Yerrigan (Swan River) at the power station into a scenic public open space.
Over the past month, thousands of people have attended Casa Musica, the Perth Festival’s southern-European inspired live music venue.
It was a joy to see people enjoying picnics on the new grass, listening to talented musicians and appreciating the stunning Boorloo Contemporary artwork projections.
The festivities will wrap up on 2 March, so be sure to visit and attend a show if you haven’t already.
Following the success of the event, we will look at holding more community celebrations, outdoor cinemas and concerts here in the future.
Next up is the Hyde Park Festival on 2 – 3 March. We’re proud to support the Rotary Club of North Perth in hosting this long-standing community event once again.
We’ve been working towards our goal to increase and preserve our tree canopy across our neighbourhoods.
Earlier this month, I spoke alongside a panel of experts about the challenges for local governments to respond to the polyphagous shot-hole borer at the WALGA Urban Greening Conference.
It was a great opportunity to share the work we’ve been doing with the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development to tackle the pest.
We’re doing everything we can to treat infested trees where possible and only consider removals as a last resort.
I encourage residents to stay vigilant, check their trees and report any suspicious signs to DPIRD via the MyPestGuide Reporter app.
Meanwhile, we’re taking further measures to preserve trees on private properties.
As part of our award-winning GreenTrack priority assessment service, we offer rebates of up to $200 for sustainable home builds and renovations.
We recently expanded the eligibility of the rebate, so that applicants who retain significant trees can now claim the discount.
The aim is to increase incentives for homeowners to retain mature trees and reduce the number of trees lost due to developments.
In a bid to protect the local environment, we’re advocating the State Government to allow councils to introduce containment areas for all pets, particularly cats.
While we have five cat prohibited areas in our Animal Local Law, this does not prevent them from roaming around streets and posing a risk to other cats and animals, particularly our beautiful bird life.
This is why we are doing everything we can to encourage pet owners to be responsible by keeping their pets at home.
Our goal is to ensure all local animals in Vincent, whether they live in homes or in the environment, are safe and protected.
Best wishes,
Mayor Alison Xamon
