Kids at the heart of NAIDOC Week celebrations

Children were at the centre of Vincent’s NAIDOC Week celebrations with two booked-out events held during the July school holidays.

NAIDOC Week is a celebration of the histories, cultures and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The 2024 theme, Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud, honours the unyielding spirit of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. It invites us all to walk together in solidarity and amplify voices that have long been silenced.

Children aged between 7 and 12 took part in a Makuru Message Stick Workshop with the guidance of Yamatji Noongar artist Noelene Regan. Noelene shared stories, culture, and country through art. After learning about the importance of Makuru, the Noongar season for winter, participants created their own message sticks to take home.

A performance by Yirra Yaakin Theatre Company wrapped up our NAIDOC celebrations on Friday. The highly acclaimed children’s show Boodjar Kaatijin had children laughing out loud and joining in with the performance of Noongar language and stories of how the land was created.

During the school term, the City of Vincent Boordiya (Bosses) Advisory Group and local students shared a truth telling lunch. Students embraced the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth. Conversations were heartfelt and meaningful.

Thank you to everyone who celebrated NAIDOC Week with us.
