Visitors to Beatty Park Leisure Centre can now take a trip down memory lane and relive the historic memories over the past 62 years as they head in for a swim or workout.

The City of Vincent commissioned muralist Dipesh ‘Peche’ Prasad to create a history mural at the centre’s entrance.

The mural pays tribute to the centre’s journey since 1962 and features imagery of swimmers, divers, iconic live musical performances and action from the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games.

Prasad has been in the mural industry for more than a decade and is also a Curtin University graphic design lecturer.

The muralist, whose two children swim at the centre, said while each project was different in terms of logistics and space, this Beatty Park piece was a great opportunity to connect with the local community.

“It is showcasing the heritage of Beatty Park, so I heard lots of feedback from people as I was creating it,” said Prasad.

“The City of Vincent supplied original historical photos to use for inspiration, which worked well as I work predominately with black and white.”

His other murals in Vincent include the Kaarak and Wollemi mural on Knight Lane in Mt Hawthorn and a commercial mural at the Realmark Head Office in Leederville.

Prasad will also be adding window graphics as a flow-on from the mural in the coming months.
