Broome Street and Wright Street Black Spot Project

Work will soon begin to improve safety at the Broome Street and Wright Street intersection in Highgate. A roundabout and pedestrian crossings will be built to slow traffic and enhance visibility for drivers and pedestrians.

The intersection has been prioritised as part of the Australian Government’s Black Spot Program, which aims to reduce crashes and save lives on Australian roads by funding works at high-risk locations.

The City received support for the project during the community consultation period in March and April 2023.

About the project

Between 2016 and 2020 the Broome Street and Wright Street intersection recorded a total of five crashes.

Traffic analysis conducted by the City of Vincent found a roundabout to be the most effective and safe option for reducing risk at the Broome Street and Wright Street intersection.

Works

Work will take place in two phases.

Phase one - Januray 2024

To prepare for the project, Western Power relocated two power poles.

Phase two - September 2024

Construction of the roundabout is planned to start on Tuesday 17 September and take around four weeks to complete, weather permitting. 

Works will be completed during the day with no night works planned. The works will involve removal and reinstatement of existing pram ramps, kerbs, asphalt and the installation of new drainage gullies and junction pits including drainage road crossings.

The intersection will be closed and detours in place. Access to some properties will be restricted and residents will need to follow the direction of traffic controllers.
