Birdwood Square

The City of Vincent is delivering upgrades to Birdwood Square.

Centrally located on Beaufort Street, the park has long been a popular spot for families, community sport and the nearby Highgate Primary School.

Local sporting clubs and Highgate Primary School are growing and require increased access to our sporting reserves. Due to the lack of amenities, the growing community cannot maximise the reserve in its current form.

A modern toilet and changeroom facility and new playground will revitalise the area, with improved footpaths, lighting and greenery to complete the space.

The upgrade is partially funded by the State Government, through an election commitment from the Hon. John Carey MLA, Department of Education WA and Vincent.

Project stages

A map of the upgrades

Stage 1: Toilet and changeroom facility

Complete

A modern toilet and changeroom facility has been built to provide convenience and allow more people to enjoy the park for longer. It includes an accessible toilet, along with two unisex toilet and shower cubicles.

The public toilet is auto-locked and open to the public between set hours. The two unisex changeroom cubicles are locked and available for hire.

The old playground has now been removed and the toilet and changeroom facility built in its place. The parkour equipment will remain, however, it will be slightly reduced in size to allow space for the new playground.

Stage 2: New playground

Complete

The all-new playground at Birdwood Square is now open.

It features two swings, basket swing, slides, a timber and rope ravine bridge crossing, fire pole, monkey bars, pommel walker, talk tube, half arched net climber, rock wall, climbing nets, steppers, an abacus and counter and shade sails.

Vincent’s playground enthusiasts and students from the neighbouring Highgate Primary School played a helping hand in coming up with ideas for the equipment.

More information

Where is Birdwood Square located?

Birdwood Square is an inner-city sportsground located at 301 Beaufort Street, Perth, opposite the Brisbane Hotel.

What is happening to the playground?

To accommodate the new facility, the relocation of the playground will be required.

The playground at Birdwood Square has been a hit with the community for more than 20 years. Understandably, the playground is looking a little tired and is soon to reach its end of usable life and requires a makeover.

To maximise the park’s layout, the playground will be moved and relocated near the new facility.

The new playground is now open.

When will the facility be open?

The toilet and changeroom facility are now open.

The new playground is now open.

Why is the new toilet facility needed?

Vincent is committed to supporting the community’s recreational needs. Local sporting clubs and Highgate Primary School are growing and requiring increased access to our sporting reserves. Unfortunately, due to the lack of amenities, the growing community cannot maximise the reserve in its current form.

The new facility will service park users, sporting activities and the nearby Highgate Primary School.

What is happening to the parkour play equipment?

The parkour play equipment is staying, however, it will be slightly reduced in size to allow space for the new playground.

Will any vegetation be removed as part of the works?

There will be minimal impact to the existing environment. Some vegetation will be trimmed to improve sightlines to the new facility.

Is there anything else planned for the park outside of this project scope?

Yes, the City is considering upgrading the sports floodlighting to assist with the growth of sport across Vincent.

Our growing sporting clubs are running out of spaces to train and the existing lights do not meet current standards to allow training to be undertaken.

The project scope is yet to be confirmed and further details will be shared, once determined.
