Locals embraced the opportunity to celebrate Aboriginal culture this week, booking out all National Reconciliation Week events held by Vincent.

The week's theme is Now More Than Ever - a reminder to all of us that no matter what, the fight for justice and the rights of Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander peoples must continue.

Vincent's vision for reconciliation is to stand side by side as one community. This has been proudly demonstrated over the past week as people from all walks of life came together to celebrate the world's oldest living cultures.

Vincent held four fully booked events to celebrate, starting with a traditional Aboriginal Art workshop run by Noongar artist, Justin Martin.

Participants learned about traditional symbols, stories, language, colours and techniques used in art and created their own piece to take home.

In the second workshop, artist Sharyn Egan talked about the significance of totems in Noongar culture before teaching participants how to make their own totem.

Dale Tilbrook led the third event with her bushtucker talk and tasting session.

She shared her knowledge of bushtucker, local Aboriginal people, traditional agricultural practices and the Noongar Six Seasons.

After this, she brought out local herbs, leaves, spices, lemon myrtle tea and jams from native ingredients for people to try.

Greg Nannup wrapped up the series with a workshop featuring Aboriginal history, Dreamtime stories and bush tools.

Community members learned about traditional Noongar tools and implements that were vital to traditional life, along with the local history and tribal area. Following this, they were treated to a Dreamtime story.

Each event attracted more than 30 attendees who learned more about reconciliation and Aboriginal culture, history and art.

Another activity called the Galup VR Experience is now available at the Vincent Library.

This is a nine-minute virtual reality film which takes viewers on a fascinating journey that shares the history and untold stories of Galup / Lake Monger.
