A total of 1,247 poppies made by the community are now on display outside the City of Vincent Administration Building for Remembrance Day.

Vincent put the call out in August for people to contribute to the Poppy Project. Handmade poppies have been pouring in since, with schools, clubs, playgroups, community groups and individuals all keen to take part.       

Each poppy is a reminder of those who served in conflicts and peacekeeping operations. Purple poppies will also be included to recognise the animals who served alongside our Australian Armed Forces.

Poppies have been created from a range of materials. A craft group made hundreds of crochet flowers during sessions at Vincent Library, while Vincent Community Shed  contributed 300 wooden poppies that were hand painted by children at local childcare centres and kindergartens.

The City also held three community workshops where locals came together to craft knitted and paper poppies.

“Remembrance Day is an opportunity to honour the sacrifices of those who served for our country during wars and conflicts, and to reflect on the tragic cost of war” said Mayor Alison Xamon.

“Support for the Poppy Project has been heartwarming. Our community have embraced the opportunity to commemorate Remembrance Day in their own creative way.

“Through these lovely, handcrafted pieces, we hope to create a space for our community to stop, reflect and remember the 61,513 lives that were lost in battle.”

Vincent Community Shed have been instrumental in the success of the project.

“Most members of the Shed would have relatives or friends who have died or suffered in conflicts, past or more recent, in places all over the world,” said Vincent Community Shed’s Lynton Hebiton.

“It was good to be involved in a project that had contributions from many in the community.”

“The Poppy Project is relevant for our generation. We all have close connections to World War II, said Social Craft Ladies’ Penny Thomas.

“I have enjoyed the common thread going through our amazing group.”

The Poppy Project will be on display until Tuesday 12 November. The City of Vincent Administration Building is located at 244 Vincent Street, Leederville.
