Young leaders become councillors for a day

Year 6 students from Sacred Heart, Mt Hawthorn, and Highgate Primary Schools became local politicians for a day through Vincent’s new Councillor for the Day initiative.

During their visit to the Council Chambers, students participated in two mock council meetings, followed an agenda, debated issues, and took turns in the roles of Mayor, CEO, councillors, and officers. They also had the opportunity to meet Mayor Alison Xamon and learn about the important role local government plays in the community.

This program, part of the City’s Strategic Community Plan and Youth Action Plan, encourages civic engagement and empowers youth contribution.

Schools interested in participating in 2025 are encouraged to contact the City of Vincent’s Community Development team.
