Beginner skaters have a new place to practice their skills in Vincent, with the Mt Hawthorn Skate Space now open and ready to skate.
The 350-square metre Mt Hawthorn Skate Space is located at Britannia Reserve, next to the basketball ring and the Litis Stadium upper carpark.
It has been designed with young and novice skaters in mind.
North Perth-based skate park and construction company Skate Sculpture took the community’s ideas on board to design and construct the space.
The space is built for families and younger skaters in the community, with entry-level elements that are ideal for building skills whilst being as fun as possible.
It features quarter pipes, banks, rails, ledges, tabletop and a mini ramp, perfect for practicing ollies, kickflips and grinds.
All elements are under one metre high from the surface level, which ensures they are safe for young children who are either learning how to skate or finetuning their skills.
The space also includes some design elements that will keep more experienced and technical skaters interested.
The lower height also helps integrate the skate space into the existing recreation area.
Young skaters tested out the street and transition elements at a free opening event on 21 September.
Families were treated to demonstrations from Skate Sculpture, free kids’ activities, a coffee van from Stomp Coffee and snacks from Hobart Deli.
The space has picnic tables and shade, making the area more accessible for parents and guardians and children to sit and take a break.
More than half of the funding for this project was provided by the Department of Communities as part of an election commitment from Hon. John Carey MLA, State Member for Perth.
The development of the skate space aligns with the Youth Action Plan 2023-2026 which includes focus areas to support young people to be strong, safe and active and provide opportunities for them to connect with each other and the broader community.
